What Does Eclipse Percentage Mean?

The percentage shown by this calculator is obscuration: the fraction of the Sun's apparent disc area covered by the Moon at maximum eclipse for your coordinates. For example, 90% obscuration means roughly 90% of the visible solar disc area is covered at the calculated peak.

The percentage can change dramatically over relatively short distances, especially close to the path of a total or annular eclipse. That is why the calculator uses latitude and longitude rather than showing one percentage for an entire country.

Solar Eclipse Types

A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers only part of the Sun from your location. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon completely covers the Sun. An annular eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but appears slightly smaller, leaving a bright ring around it.

Solar Eclipse Safety

Never look directly at the Sun during a partial or annular eclipse without proper certified solar viewing protection. Ordinary sunglasses, tinted plastic, exposed film and improvised dark materials are not suitable. During a total eclipse, direct viewing is only safe during the brief total phase when the Sun is completely covered; certified protection is required again as soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears.

The calculator converts your selected place into geographic coordinates and searches forward for solar eclipses at that observer location. It calculates the local eclipse type, maximum obscuration, event times and the Sun's altitude above or below the horizon.

Times are displayed in the selected IANA time zone. If you enter coordinates manually, check that the time zone field matches the location so daylight-saving changes are handled correctly.

Does every solar eclipse look the same from the whole country?

No. Eclipse coverage and timing depend on your exact position. Two places in the same country can see noticeably different percentages, and only a narrow path experiences totality during a total solar eclipse.

Why does the tool show Sun altitude?

An eclipse can mathematically occur for your coordinates while the Sun is very low or below the horizon. Sun altitude helps show whether the event is actually observable from that location at that time.

Is this calculator only for the UK?

Are the eclipse times shown in local time?
